Green Sensing
Extending the concept of soft sensors to Green Sensing
Introduction
There are many technological innovations labeled as “green,” from green power to more specialised areas like green AI. In the field of soft sensors, Compolytics has extended this concept to green sensing, integrating efficiency and sustainability alongside traditional performance metrics such as precision, robustness, and interoperability.
As sensors become increasingly complex and essential to Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications, sustainability is gaining attention beyond pure technical performance. While some aspects of soft sensors already incorporate sustainability, such as green AI, a comprehensive and systematic approach has not yet been taken. Compolytics has addressed this gap by introducing the green sensing framework, which optimises sensor design, data processing, and AI integration to reduce energy and resource consumption.

The foundational scientific paper outlining this approach, including key evaluation mechanisms and real-world applications in IIoT, was published in Machine Learning Reports (2023).
Beyond scientific attention, this concept has also been covered in more general publications, such as the Discover Germany magazine.
Compolytics has been awarded by the German government with the label for in-house research (BSFZ) over several years.
